Motorola continues its legacy in the foldable smartphone market with the launch of the Razr 50. This device, a successor to the Razr 40, aims to make the clamshell foldable form factor more accessible and functional for everyday users. The Razr 50 introduces significant upgrades, particularly to its external display and performance, making it a compelling option in the mid-range foldable segment.

Design and Display

The Razr 50 maintains the iconic clamshell design that is synonymous with the Razr series. It features a modern, sleek look with a durable build. The phone is available in several stylish colors, including Koala Grey, Beach Sand, and Spritz Orange, often with a vegan leather finish for a premium feel. It also boasts an IPX8 water-resistant rating.

The most notable improvement on the Razr 50 is its external display. While the Razr 40 had a limited 1.5-inch cover screen, the Razr 50 sports a much larger 3.63-inch pOLED display. This screen is highly functional, allowing users to perform a wide range of tasks without unfolding the phone, such as:

  • Accessing apps and social media

  • Managing notifications and schedules

  • Using the camera for selfies and video calls

  • Utilizing the new Google Gemini app for AI-powered tasks directly from the cover screen.

When unfolded, the Razr 50 reveals a vibrant 6.9-inch FHD+ pOLED main display. This screen features a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, ensuring smooth scrolling and a responsive user experience. It also supports HDR10+ and reaches a peak brightness of 3000 nits. The flexible display is designed to be durable, and the simplified hinge mechanism reduces the visibility of the crease.

Performance and Battery

Under the hood, the Motorola Razr 50 is powered by the MediaTek Dimensity 7300X chipset. This 4nm octa-core processor is designed for efficiency and smooth performance, handling daily tasks and multitasking with ease. The phone comes with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB or 512GB of internal storage, though it does not have a microSD card slot for expandable storage.

The Razr 50 is equipped with a 4200 mAh battery, a notable upgrade from its predecessor. This larger battery capacity, combined with the efficient processor, helps the phone last a full day on a single charge. It supports 33W wired fast charging and 15W wireless charging, offering flexibility for users on the go.

Camera System

The camera setup on the Razr 50 is designed to be versatile and user-friendly, especially with the foldable form factor. The dual-camera system on the back includes:

  • A 50MP main sensor with OIS (Optical Image Stabilization)

  • A 13MP ultrawide lens with a 120° field of view, which also doubles as a Macro Vision lens.

The large cover display allows for unique shooting modes, such as using the main rear cameras for high-quality selfies or setting the phone in a "Flex View" position to act as its own tripod for hands-free photos and videos. The phone also includes a 32MP front-facing camera for traditional selfies and video calls.

Software and Features

The Motorola Razr 50 runs on Android 14 with Motorola's Hello UX. Motorola promises three years of OS upgrades and four years of security updates for the device. A key software feature is the integration of Moto AI, which offers a suite of AI-powered tools for the camera and other functionalities. The phone also supports dual-SIM functionality, with options for a physical nano-SIM and an eSIM.
